| Weight: 965.0 grams, BCS: 1.5 S: Standing in box O: As bird was seen eating and looks to be processing okay went ahead and offered clean meat to see if he can process it. ------------- PHYSICAL EXAM FINDINGS ---------------- Mentation: QAR Temp (F): 102.7 Dehydration (%): 5 Neurologic: WNL Head/mouth/beak: Rhinotheca broken at base and regrown incorrectly very short and stubby but curved downward (see pictures). Gnathotheca very long Ears: WNL Eyes: WNL Wings: WNL Legs: WNL Feet: Minor abrasions and lacerations Body: Emaciated, likely has not been able to use uropygial gland and it is greasy and feathers are kind of matted around it. Feather condition: WNL Ectoparasites: lice, flat flies - likely due to not preening Radiographic findings: Broken rhinotheca Initial treatment: 40cc LRS PO, 10g clean meat on chop block A: Red tailed hawk with chronic rhinotheca abnormality likely secondary to trauma >6months ago leading to an emaciated state. Bird seen gnawing on spine at capture site and has been surviving enough to get by with beak defect. Bird is emaciated but did not seem overly dehydrated and poor body condition is likely more of a chronic is vs acute has beak has had time to heal trauma to beak. Blood values are poor but also likely more of a chronic issue and bird is clinically alert and not showing normal signs of severe emaciation so willingly to do more research into corrective beak coping and growth after keratin as regrown over a fracture site. Refractometer also not calibrated after looking at it after blood was read (values of PCV and TS may be higher than recorded). P: Rx Terbinafine, liver support, emeraid, clean meat. Monitor ability to process diet offered, repeat blood work in 3 days. Rx Iron and Vit B. Vet check tomorrow. Look into research on corrective coping and rhinotheca defects.
